Spiritual Leadership

Spiritual Leadership (Pastors and Deacons);

 “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

                    James 1:27

At Salem, we are pleased to support the biblical model of pastors (elders) who lead and deacons who serve in the church.  We currently have six individuals (three men, three women) who serve the Lord and serve the church family as deacons.  They are led by our lay leader, Wilber Sites, who is a retired pastor and retired Bishop of the United Brethren in Christ church.

Much of the work of the deacons involves providing care of the flock, particularly to widows and others finding themselves in difficult situations.  Our deacons have a discretionary ‘benevolence’ fund from which they can draw to help those in need.  They also plan occasional events throughout the year (sometimes in concert with another ministry) to help people come together and experience God’s love in a special way.

Our deacons also serve to ensure people feel warmly welcomed during our Sunday morning services, and to work to bring healing and reconciliation between church members or families who find themselves in conflict.

To qualify as a deacon, individuals must be spiritually mature, meeting the spirit of 1st Timothy 3:8-12.   Would you like to reach out to those who are hurting, and bring hope and healing?  Perhaps you would pray about applying for the role of a deacon at
